If it's inappropriate to carry this thread on the mail lists, please
respond to me privately.
Now that I have Slackware-8.1 installed I learned that when I add a user
(for example, me), no home directory is set up, no .bash_profile or .bashrc
is created, and so on. In other words, no skeleton for a user as is the case
with Red Hat. So I'm doing it all by hand.
But, I'm missing something here. I wrote (based on my files on the
desktop), .bash_profile, .bashrc and .keymap. In .bashrc I have defined
colors for the prompt, but they're not visible when I log in until I type,
"source .bashrc". Why? Isn't .bashrc read automatically? It should be, if I
read the beginning of .bash_profile properly.
I'm now wondering what else I have to add manually to get going. Haven't
tried the network or starting X yet.
Puzzled,
Rich
