What kind of network card is it?  When you restart the network scripts,
I think you reinitialize the NIC... and some NICs (I hear the earlier
revisions of the 8139, for example) tend to poop out after a few gigs of
transfers.

A hack/workaround might be a cron job that restarts the network every
two days around 0300 or so, if that's a possibility, anyway.
