A word of warning about ATA RAID: some controllers do not handle disk 
failure gracefully.  So while your data will be fine, do not expect your 
machine to stay up if a drive fails.  Specifically, I've heard this about 
the Promise cards.  I've heard very good things about 3ware, BTW.  And 
most (all?) RAID controllers will allow you to turn off RAID and do it 
all in software.
