[PLUG] apt-get problems

What's going on with my apt-get?

# apt-get -update
E: Command line option 'p' [from -update] is not known.

Synaptic gives a sub process "/bin/rpm" error code
and RedHat up2date needs "30M on the filesystem"

My / has a total of 288.6M with only 8.1M available.
As I have 80G on the disk what can I clean off / if anything to make
room for the new kernel upgrade? I know it's not necessary.
