A lot of people have been using Dallas 1-wire parts for weather
stations and home automation (like HVAC zone-control) with Linux.  If
you work with batteries that charge to less than 6V, I'd visit our
website http://www.maxim-ic.com and check out the 1-wire parts list.
You probably want a DS2761, and I'm willing to bet you can get an eval
kit for cheap/free.
