because nobody can agree on when line breaks are meaningful and
when they're not, and there's no simple way of marking the
difference between meaningful and meaningless line breaks.  I
think the future will be "reader sees exactly what writer saw
when the message was composed, or sees an automatic translation
when that's not possible", but the world is nowhere near that
yet.  maybe in a couple decades, after people stop trying to make
naive separations between "content" and "style".
