Actually you can, if (for example) you can get a copy of the LD_PRELOAD
library "vsound". That library puts a wrapper around the open, etc.
system calls that lets you substitute a file or potentially another file
descriptor for the file /dev/dsp.
I currently use it (along with the simple command line player from
Real's HelixDNA project) to access a couple RealAudio internet radio
stations from my TiVo byRequest linux server.
