[PLUG] pppd connection errors

I'm having difficulties w/ a modem connection thru pppd on Mandrake 9.1. I seem to be dialing out fine, but it immediately terminates the connection, usually w/ pppd error # 10 - unable to determine client IP address. Numeruos attemts w/ both pppd & linuxconf haven't seemed to make it. Any ideas on how the client identifies its IP? I've been accepting default values through the process so far.
