Ok - try this line to play the DVD:

mplayer -ao alsa9 -vo xv dvd://1

...and see if that still has the sound problems.  I think mplayer
defaults to -ao oss, since that works both for folks using alsa, and for
those using OSS.

Should that fail... what sound card did you say you were using, again?
