ACPI can do that. Not sure how to install it from your perspective, but
I got it running when I went to the 2.6 test kernel series, and then
apt-get install acpid acpi

Of course, I still haven't worked out suspend, but ah well.

acpi -V

 Thermal 1: ok, 29.0 degrees C
 AC Adapter 1: on-line
