Greetings:

I was informed by mail that DSL is now available in my area.

QWEST offers a device called an Actiontec 1520, but surfing blogs & install
woes sites, seems to indicate that that unit is rather buggy.

I currrently have a gateway cpu, a second computer behind it for my job. If we
get this working, my wife may be able to telecommute a few days a week, but
her place is an MS-only shop, and she would be using VPN.

So, does it sound like we are talking a heterogenious network of Linux and
Win? I live between St. Helens & Scappoose, and whatever system I use pretty
much has to be rock-solid stable. I already have my own job, which means I
won't have much bandwidth to learn to 'administer' the new device on top of
that. I have to learn enough job-related things within my own field to keep
current as is. I have no experience in managing routers, or switches, so I'm
looking for something that needs as much attention as a typical TV set - lots
of complex circuitry inside, sure, BUT the user interface is simple. Turn it
on/off, plug things into it (like a VCR, DVD or game player) and these things
work, without having to call for tech support or buy & read 3 five-pound 'In
a Nutshell' books ...

What sort of hardware would plug into the wall (RJ-11 telephone socket) and
provide one or more Cat-5 plugs for the Linux computers and an open Cat-5
plug so if my wife jacks he laptop into that port, then she can VPN in Win
simultaneously as I do e-mails 'n' stuff in Linux?

Also, comments on a Cysco 678?
