[PLUG] Loading sound modules in Slackware-9.1

When I look for the modules for the built-in sound support on the MSI
motherboard I find them in /lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/ as
ac97.o.gz and ac97_codec.o.gz. However, I cannot load them with 'modprobe'
and they are not loaded during boot (only soundcore shows up with 'lsmod').
Are they not loaded until needed? Is there a reason why modprobe would
report "Can't locate module
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/ac97.o.gz" when the file is there
and greater than 0 bytes?
Puzzled,
Rich
