That's garbage.  There's no correlation between reply-to munging and
longer or shorter discussions.

The default behavior of most discussion list users is to use the "reply to
all" feature of their mailer (and most don't bother to edit those headers
to remove the sender when the sender is already on the list).  There's a
single-keystroke/button approach to replying to the list OR the sender.

With reply-to munging in place, replying to just the sender is an ordeal
that is not easy to automate without repairing every single message as it
arrives.

Do you really want to extend threads by making it difficult to NOT post to
the list or do you want to make both actions equally easy?
