You can clean the heads of the drive with alcohol and q-tips. Do not ever use 
alcohol on any rubber in any drive (VCR, DAT...) There's special cleaner for the 
rubber or you can use an abrasive like your VCR tape for the rubber. Alcohol 
pulls the oil out of the rubber and kills it. (thet's the technical term for it)

That's my 2 cents, anyway.
