I believe .Xdefaults is depreciated in favor of .Xresources. At least one
can be a symlink to the other.
There is a tool (I can't remember the name) that will you use to click on
parts of a running X app and it will spit out the property so you can stick
it in your .Xresources.
I know with xfig you can specify the initail window size on startup:

-geometry [WxH]+x+y (-geom)
Set the size and/or position of the xfig window. You may use this to
set the size of the main xfig window, or you may instead set the size of the
drawing canvas in inches or cm using the -pwidth and -pheight options.
