ATA 4 drives will allow you to monitor smart but not with the detail that
later drives provide.

The ATA 4 spec did not include the Error Logging pages.
ATA 5 rev 1.0 did and it seemed (by the date on the doc) that
it was released in May 1999.  Drives produced prior to this could
have supported it but would have been non-standard.

The ATA spec is currently at ATA6.  ATA7 seems to be in review.
