This is not what this file should look like; from my laptop I've got
entries like this:

alias eth0 e100
alias usb-controller usb-uhci
alias eth1 orinoco_pci
alias tty-ldisc-11 irtty
alias char-major-161 ircomm-tty
alias nsc-ircc dongle_id=0x09
alias irda0 nsc-ircc
alias floppy off

Note that it might also be called /etc/modprobe.conf, which is I think
the new preferred name.
