I've had these kinds of problems too, but with the ones with power
supplies.  That was a few years ago now, but it happened even with the
$700 16-port Belkins.  OTOH, I've got a couple older 4-ports (one's
actually AT-style keyboard and serial mouse) that I've never had
problems with.
