In case that's unclear 66.93.38.1 is the gateway on my ISP's side of the
DSL connection.

But it works just as well with a public server address:

jbrelin at shaft:~$ ping www.speakeasy.net
PING speakeasy.net (216.254.0.95): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 216.254.0.95: icmp_seq=0 ttl=61 time=14.3 ms
64 bytes from 216.254.0.95: icmp_seq=1 ttl=61 time=14.1 ms
64 bytes from 216.254.0.95: icmp_seq=2 ttl=61 time=13.1 ms
64 bytes from 216.254.0.95: icmp_seq=3 ttl=61 time=13.9 ms
64 bytes from 216.254.0.95: icmp_seq=4 ttl=61 time=12.5 ms

--- speakeasy.net ping statistics ---
5 packets transmitted, 5 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 12.5/13.5/14.3 ms
