One of the nice things about Linux's modularity *is* the general ability
to just drop in replacement hardware, even if it isn't necessarily
horribly similar to the hardware being replaced. You should be able to
drop in a new motherboard, processor, and whatever else is dead, fire it
up, and be good to go. You may need to adjust configuration files and
the like for the hardware, depending on how much (and how) hardware
detection the fancy hat OS does.

Plug in the new hardware, hit the power button, watch the fun messages
that go scrolling by your screen. Fix what is broke. :-)

Plug 'er in. Make sure the motherboard, RAM, and CPU are all
compatible. Most boards today use DDR. Drives and case should be good
to go. If it's an old board you're replacing, with an AGP video card,
you may need a new video card, too (if it doesn't fit, do NOT force
it). PCI cards should be good to go. Make sure your PSU is capable of
powering the new board/CPU properly (a 200W PSU may have been fine for
an old Athlon 550, but won't power an Athlon XP 2400+ very nicely).

Or a lightning strike?
