I'd imagine it's temporary. Remember that currently, most SATA drives
(and basically all of the models that we mortals can afford) are just
PATA drives with integrated SATA bridges.

Certainly 3ware's latest RAID controllers take great advantage of the
connector density offering a 12-port model in about the same space as
your video card. They cost an arm and a leg, though.

Remember, when you're mass-producing a mainboard, saving 35 cents is
EVERYTHING. (That's not sarcasm.)
