My brother is working on a voice over IP attempt of his own using Java.
On a 11 mbps wifi network running into a 100 mb/s network we could talk
just fine.
Naturally the thought was to try and run it through our DSL. He
expected blank spots maybe, there's a lot of static though. I
guess there's a way to compress a 16 bit 44 kHz audio stream.
Another option is to record a minute and require it to be
buffered at the remote end before it plays back, but he wants
to get as close to live conversation as possible. It seems
like a great piece of software, as is, for use over a lan
though. It works over 10 mbps and faster connections.
What are the common ways of addressing random latency and
the sub lan speeds of broadband connections for voip
deployment? I hear rumors that cell phones modulate the
noise etc. and actually calculate on the fly how to tell
a remote cell phone how to reproduce your voice. Apparently
on a cell phone, it's not your voice but a computer
reproduction that's heard.
