[PLUG] Debian Guide

I am wanting to dive into the world of debian and am looking for a good guide.  
I have consulted the debian manual and can get the basics up and running, but 
am looking for a "where to go from here" guide.  I am pretty familiar with 
gentoo (love everything about it but the long compile times!) but from what I 
noticed (i think) with debians packaging system is I was able to install kde 
for instance and it didnt install X along with it.  I am probably doing 
something wrong.

Any links would be greatly appreciated.
