Cool, I'm glad you found a way to make it work :)

A slightly cleaner way would be to leave the entry blank, like:

GATEWAY=""

Or just comment the line out.

That way you're not setting a gateway at all for that device, as opposed 
to setting one of 0.0.0.0. When Paul mentioned that address it was 
because that's the destination that gets set for the gateway, it 
represents all other addresses not specified in the routing table.

 From a pratical standpoint it probably doesn't matter, it sounds like 
it's ok as it is :)
