ACKKK!!  NO, NO, NO!

Static is NO LESS of a problem now than it was then.  Leaving the case
plugged in *will* help ground it, and if you keep in contact with the
case at all times, you'll be grounded... greatly reducing the chances of
some ESD damage.

Additionally, it's possible the system itself could build up a small
static charge... so if you are grounded and it is not (ie; the cable is
unplugged) *it* could discharge static to *you* - which does the same
damage.

Just be careful working around inside computers, especially when it's
dry outside.  Better safe than sorry.
