The PS/2 specification was not designed with hot plugging in mind. It's
live, and has little to no protection for the controller chips behind it.
If you unplug the mouse, you risk the mouse, the ps/2 controller, and in
some cases, the motherboard. If you unplug the keyboard, you risk the
keyboard, the keyboard controller and the motherboard.
When you risk the motherboard, you risk everything that's plugged into
it...
Unexpected use can produce unexpected results.
