[PLUG] all (Windows) files filled with nulls

My neighbor had a strange Windog problem, and after backing up his home
directory to a CD and reinstalling Windows, I found that the files in
his home directory were all filled with nulls.
I've never seen this before; the files all had the right names and
reasonable sizes, but their content was just gone.
The original problem was that almost all text was gone; icon labels,
menus, email, everything except window titles. Clicking twice under an
icon on the desktop showed a stripe all the way across the screen with
the icon's label centered in the stripe. This is a 1400x1050 LCD on a
laptop, so we're talking about a long stripe.
Since the drive is a 2.5" and I had to use an untested adapter to
connect it to a desktop to back up the home directory, is it possible
that the adapter somehow caused the data to be replaced with nulls? I
can't imagine how this could happen, but I'm not much of a PC hardware
guy.
TIA.
I couldn't get him to leave Windows (I blame Knoppix, which crashed on
boot), but I did get him to switch to Mozilla and Thunderbird. #:)
