[PLUG] my mouse wheel stoped working

well I got up today and turned on my computer and my mouse wheel does
not work anymore. I find this very strange. I really don't know what to
do other then reinstall my OS. If that is what I need to do then how
would I keep my home directory from being formated? I don't care about
the rest of it. it can all go but I don't want my personal files to be
lost. 

any advice?
