[PLUG] adding user accounts in bulk

Anyone know of a nice script for adding users in bulk on a Linux system? 
Assume you already have a database of user information of some kind- a 
/passwd file from another system, a directory or database of some kind.
I think I would want the login names and other personal data, and then 
generate a new password. I've been googling without much success.

If there is such a thing, it will probably have to be modified, but it would 
be nice to have something to play with.
