[PLUG] ip/iptables/ipchains Tutorial (for the networking challenged)

Are there any good resources on using any of these (with a preference for
iptables) for network challenged?  I either have a complete block against
understanding them, was working under-fire, or the tutorials I've seen
assumed more knowledge than I had so I've never quite got the hand of 
iptables.
   I also am running on some 'interesting' hardware configurations (some 
of it just plain OLD JUNK) so never knew if I was fighting network 
problems damned hardware and sometimes it was the NIC that was the bad 
hardware.

So I'm looking for suggestions for online, dead tree, etc. information on 
using iptables or ipchains.
