Why?

If the marking is not on the IMAP server, why would a different
client not pick up a message as an unread one? I would think
the only concern is not deleting a message off the server if
you want to see it on another machine, but then how do you
avoid having fetchmail get the same messages multiple times?
If you don't use fetchall fetchmail must know what is read,
but how does it get that for an account that it has never
before accessed? Does it assume that only messages for the
current day are unread when it doesn't know otherwise?
Where is the local message list for fetchmail and evolution
when you are accessing an IMAP account? There's got to be
a list somewhere if you can download less than every message
that's on the IMAP server.

It would be awfully nice to be able to clear anything a month
old or older off an IMAP server with fetchmail.

On what? I want to eventually disallow accessing machines other than
my local mail hub for mail, but before I do this, I need to make sure
I have the hub set up well and give users a chance to try it.

Does fetchmail have the IMAP server to SMTP messages to it?
In any mail user agent when you are going out directly to an IMAP
server, do you download the email messages when you click on their
headers? Does this downloading affect the state of the IMAP
server at all? What can fetchmail or any IMAP client change on
the IMAP server?

Am I right in assuming that if I use say evolution to access imap
account rob at wherever, then use Eudora to access the same account
rob at whereever, that these two MUAs maintain their own information
about what is read and not read? Will you get all messages with
both mail user agents if they are running side by side accessing
rob at whereever at the same time? If not, why not?
