I don't run Red Hat anything, but your instructions here imply to me that
you've got postfix running in a chroot jail.  If that's the case, then a
symlink will not do because you can't follow symlinks out of the chroot
environment.

Sorry if I'm mistaken about the chroot, but that's the only reason I can
imagine to point /etc/aliases to another filesystem location.
