[PLUG] LPRng, ghostscript, apsfilter, ijs driver.... nothing works

I have been trying for a week to install a simple print server using
LPRng, ghostscript, apsfilter, and the hpijs driver. It is the most
horrifying Linux experience I have had. I have no idea how to tell if
ghostscript supports my driver. I installed the hpijs driver and
running gs -h shows a device called ijs, which seems to be the one I
need. However, it doesn't show up in the apsfilter SETUP, so I chose
the driver called ijs/DESKJET_940 (I have an HP904c). My printcap file
looks like this:

# APS1_BEGIN:printer1
# - don't delete start label for apsfilter printer1
# - no other printer defines between BEGIN and END LABEL
aps1|ijs/DESKJET_940;r=300x300;q=medium;c=full;p=letter;m=auto:\
    :lp=/dev/lp0:\
    :if=/usr/local/etc/apsfilter/basedir/bin/apsfilter:\
    :sd=/var/spool/lpd/aps1:\
    :lf=/var/spool/lpd/aps1/log:\
    :af=/var/spool/lpd/aps1/acct:\
    :mx#0:\
    :sh:
# APS1_END - don't delete this

Everything looks right to me, having never set all of this up before.
But when I try to print a test page from SETUP, it tells me that there
was an unrecoverable error with ghostscript.

I am running Red Hat 9, LPRng 3.8.27, ghostscript 7.07, apsfilter 7.2.5,
and hpijs 1.6.
