For a server you might want to check out http://www.gentoo.org.

Windows XP is not magically secure, far from in fact.  Check out
http://www.grc.com.  I've never tried it, but running a Linux server
on a G3 or G4 might prove easier than using a PC.  There are a
lot of cheap G3's now.  Macs are designed to work with a custom
BSDish system in the first place, they should be Linux friendly.
I don't think G3's, maybe even G4's too, are very expensive on
E-Bay.  Heck, Linux can run on a playstation and you can
probably route through that.  Don't know if this helps, but I did
notice servers for sale at gentoo.org.  I'd say spend your $600
on a Linux specialist, not Microsoft Window XP.
