Because when Apple pioneered the use of cut/copy & paste (ca. 1981),
they used ^X, ^C, and ^V.  When MS stole their look & feel, it only made
sense to take their well-known keyboard shortcuts too.  :-)

I agree that highlight & center-click is often more convenient, but the
well-known shortcuts that have been around since the first real
application of this idea are every bit as much the "right" way.
