Sorry for the slight mistake....802.11g introduces 54Mbits to an enviornment that allows 802.11b devices and 802.11g devices to coexist on the 2.4ghz band, although 802.11a still may not exist. And when an 802.11b device exists on that 802.11g enviornment, the 802.11g cards revert to B as to not interfere with the B card...which can dramatically reduce performance on the G card. There is also a difference in the encoding schemes between the 3 technologies.

The devices that allow 802.11b and 802.11a are the "dual band" wireless AP's which have a much higher price, although can allow interopability between the 3 standards(A, B, and G).
