I've been struggling with Samba too. I recently picked up an excellent
book, "The Official Samba-3 HOWTO and Reference Guide."
ISBN: 0-13-145355-6

Definitely pick it up. There's lots of example setups at the beginning
and then it dives into the details in the later chapters.
