This is a good idea. It was discussed just recently on the blind Linux
list (blinux). It seems that gOCR was not well known. Perhaps it will be
better known now. I'll forward your message to the blinux list.

I'm deaf-blind myself. The reason why OCR software for the blind is so
expensive is that it includes all kinds of bells and whistles for people
who are not computer literate. There are in fact inexpensive packages that
just use an OCR engine as a front end for a word processor.
