Bzzt.  /etc/hosts is just a mapping of ip number to hostname.  That is
not where you go to assign an IP address to an interface, which is
what I gather Mike was looking for.  Nor does /etc/hosts get filled in
magically.  Essentially, it is a place to manually place mappings.
