The graphical suggestions are good IF you can afford the time, hassle,
and politics of putting the special client (er, server, depending on
what flavor) on the remote machine.

On the other hand, for those of you who can live without the graphics,
"screen" is the niftiest program ever, supporting all kinds of stuff
like detaching and reattaching, scrollback buffers in each of multiple
windows, split-screen, and intelligent key bindings that don't conflict
much with other apps' magic keys. And all you need is a VT100 (emulator).

Not enough people use or know about screen, but even if you never use
the multiple virtual window capability, it's worth using screen within
the window for all your terminal sessions in case you get booted -- you
can always reattach to the screen and have your process happily waiting
for you.
