[PLUG] Kooka

Is anyone using Kooka? (This is a front end(?) to SANE - at least I think I've
said that the right way.) The version I installed today using YaST is:

Kooka 0.44 (Using KDE 3.2.1)

I'm just beginning to experiment with it. I have successfully installed it on
my SuSE 9.1 machine, and can scan with it. I'm trying to use the OCR feature
(it uses gocr, which is installed and sort of works).

The kooka documentation I get on my system is rather limited. I did a Google
search and found other SuSE documentation for kooka that is more complete at:

http://shelob.temple.edu/suse/local/suselinux-userguide_en/ch19s02.html

However, there are discrepancies between the documentation and the program.
The documentation says to scan in binary, but I the program calls that
Lineart (that's consistant with the Windows scanner driver that I'm used to
using).

More important is that the instructions say to select a section of the
pre-scanned image and pre-scan again to cut down on the amount to be scanned.
This doesn't work, or I'm not doing it right.

Another problem is that I have not found a preferred image format for gocr.
BMP sort of works, but has problems with the fancy font in the booklet I'm
trying to scan. Does anyone know if there's a preferred format? There are
quite a few available, from BMP to XV (whatever that is). I'll experiment
with a few and see what differences I get, but I'll appreciate any other
shared experience.

Thanks in advance.
