   SOLVED. I discovered ~/.thunderbird/profiles.ini. In there I saw the
incorrect directory so I changed it. Now it all works.

   Allow me to redirect your attention to my inabilty to get the ThinkPad to
boot into GUI mode after the X.org upgrade. That I've not yet figured out by
myself.
