[PLUG] Lyx: Two figures side-by-side?

I have a bunch of graphs I need to put in my paper. They only need to be
half a page wide, so to save space I would like to put them in a
2-column grid (side-by-side). My googling turned up this tip:

The subfigure trick *almost* does it, but it doesn't create two separate
figures and the captions appear under the graphic, not above like every
other figure.

How can I simply make two figure floats appear on the same line?
