[PLUG] Disk space question using LVM

Hello all:
 
I have recently become the sysadmin for a machine running SuSE Linux
8.1 (i386) using LVM.  The previous sysadmin has a cronjob that checks
for disk space running out and I am trying to figure out how to free up
space on the "/" partition.  Here is the output from df -k:
 
Filesystem    1K-blocks      Used          Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda3     16851664     16356572    495092   98%   /
 
The problem is when I "ls -ls" the "/" directory I see no where near
16GB being used.  
 
Am I missing something obvious?  My apologies if this is
vague/confusing or totally off base.
