This is an opening for me to ask a question about grub versus lilo. I know
that grub offers more than lilo in several contexts. My impression, however,
and based on limited grub experience is that it really doesn't matter which
loader one uses if there's only a single OS on the system. Is this correct?

I used to triple-boot PC-DOS/7, NT/4 and Red Hat-4.x using lilo with no
problems. For the past several years I've booted only linux, and usually
only a single kernel version. In this situation I fail to see any difference
between the two. And, when I trashed /usr on my new notebook (please don't
ask how I did such a stupid thing!), and restored it from the rescue
partition, grub was replaced with lilo. Woiks just fine.

No flame war intended, just curiosity.

Thanks,

Rich
