[PLUG] Newbie (to) debian help

I have been (slowly) trying to get myself acquainted with debian. Here
is my issue, I cannot seem to mount any cifs/smb partitions, I get the
"wrong fs or bad superblock" error. So I read somewhere I should
upgrade to the latest 2.6 kernel. I have successfully built a 2.6.9
kernel but cannot get the thing to boot. Prior to this i was using
2.6.8-1. The error I get is "VFS-cannot open root device "hdb2" or
unknown block(0,0)". What I cant figure out is I am using the
same .config file that was created by the debian kernel package for my
2.6.8 kernel and all my options in grub are correct...
I know my way around RedHat and Gentoo pretty well, but Debian makes me
feel like I am starting all over again :-) I would really like to get
acquainted with it because it seems to be the distro all the gurus use,
so I think that says something. Any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks
Dave P
