The class is entitled "Open Source UNIX Software Development".
Basically, we have 8 weeks to work on almost ANY GPL'd project that we
want. In doing so, we get to familiarize our self with the open source
development in general (i.e. licenses, patches, IRC, sourceforge,
revision control...)

There is a wide variety of projects this term. One guy is writing a USB
ethernet driver, another is writing a clone of the NES Dragon Warrior
Game, and another is doing some work on a programmable electronic fuel
injection controller. I am getting credit for working with the Kernel
Janitor's in reducing the GCC4 Kernel build warnings.

It's a great class. And like you said, extremely broad and informal.
Hope to see you soon.
