Right-clicking on the icon and selecting 'Properties' gives me a window
"Properties for firefox - KDesktop" which shows the icon, and says it's
"Type" is "Shell Script". The icon itself has no button, and does not
respond to clicking or right-clicking.

Ah! I see the problem. The icons I have were not created as a "Link to
application", but are simpler links to startup scripts. When I look at
the properties of other icons, I can change the image of the icon. I've
created new icons that let me change their images, and they work as they
should. Now, what I need to do is to find suitable icons from Mozilla.
I'll go check their site.

Thanks for the nudge in the right direction.
