With most wikis, you can restrict which users are allowed to make
updates.  So if it's the wikis' openness to modification by the
general public that's turning you off, you might want to look into
using a wiki anyway.  You can configure your wiki so that only you or
people you've selected are allowed to make changes, with read-only
access for everyone else.

You can download wikipedia's engine from sourceforge here:

It needs a MySQL backend.  It's developed for Linux, but since it's
written in PHP, it shouldn't be too problematic to get it running on
Solaris.

I know you said you said that you weren't really looking for a wiki,
but you haven't said why not.  I'm not sure what your needs are, so
I'm suggesting that a wiki might still suit your situation.  Arguably,
editing html files in vi constitutes a knowledge base app.
