How far does it get? Does it boot? Does it get to detecting hardware and
simply doesn't find the drive?

I think you pegged the most likely issue. Mainly many SATA controllers
don't look like normal IDE controllers. The first thing I can think of to
do is tell it to boot the 2.6.8 kernel (more recent drivers) rather than
the 2.4.27 kernel (the conservative default).
